The Importance of Chapel in a Child’s Education

February 23, 2016

In education there must be balance to a child’s learning. Teaching a child arithmetic without teaching them English will leave that child unprepared for success in their future. You can apply that same analogy to any of the other subjects as well. We must have balance in education to help our children to elevate in their opportunity for success. How does chapel fit into this discussion of education? Is it a vital component to the success of my child? I believe that the Bible is essential to helping us understand the past but in creating character in the lives of students for the future. I still remember sitting in chapel as an elementary and high school student and the tremendous impact those services had on my life.  The messages that were preached in chapel were great Biblical truths that were applicable to my life in every area.  These messages were not the first time I had heard them though. My parents, long before I attended chapel at my Christian school, taught me how to live according to the Bible.  They were investing God’s Word in my life because they knew it would be life changing. At Southland Christian Academy we desire to partner with you in teaching your child Biblical truth that will transform their life.  Our chapel services are designed to accomplish a specific set of things:

  1. Glorify God

Our main purpose in doing anything at Southland Christian Academy (SCA) is to glorify God. It is for this purpose that our ministries (Open Door Baptist Church, SCA, and ODBC Child Development Center) exist.  I Corinthians 10:31 clearly illustrates this, “Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.”  We desire to bring God glory and teach your child to glorify The One to whom glory is due.

  1. Biblically Instruct

Throughout our life, we will receive instruction in school, our workplace and from other authority figures. It is important to understand how to respond and determine the right instructions to follow. Much of our society is trying to instruct our children in many ways that will cause them pain and difficulty.  God’s Word specifically tells us it is our responsibility to instruct the younger generation.  We find this command in Deuteronomy 6:7, “And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.”  This command from God is something we desire to obey through our chapel services.

  1. Personal Application

All the knowledge in the world is useless if it’s not applied. It is not enough to instruct without showing how one can apply that instruction to his life.  Paul compelled the church in Phillipi to apply the Biblical truth they had learned.  Philippians 4:9, “Those things, which you have both learned, received, and heard, and seen in me, do…”  Each truth that is taught during our chapel services will always have practical application with it so the students will know and understand how to implement the Biblical truth in their life.

Your child’s education is very important to us at Southland Christian Academy, but if that is all we are concerned about, we have missed an important part of their development. Our chapel services play an important role not only in your child’s education but also in their spiritual development so that they can bring God glory with their live
